As music fans we have seen this transition before, whether it is an actor becoming a singer, or vice versa. The transition has yielded mixed results. Success can be elusive for an actor looking to create a successful singing career. The success of the transition depends on the person taking the risk. Mack Wilds, aka Tristan Wilds is a New York City native by way of Staten Island. As an actor he is famous for roles in the CW series 90210 and the HBO series The Wire. His debut R&B offering is New York: A Love Story. The initial single from the album, “Own It”, has a 90's R&B New York City sound. The song displays the rugged confidence which was greatly associated with the New York City of yesteryear. The raw bass thumping throughout the song fits well in any rotation of Hip Hop beats blaring on any late summer or early fall sound system. It is refreshing to hear R&B with a New York City sound, and with blatant bravado attached to it. The album, which was executive produced by industry veteran Salaam Remi of Fugees fame, focuses on capturing the sounds of the NYC Metropolitan area. The album features New York City legendary artists such as Raekwon, Method Man, and Doug E. Fresh. A track which truly stands out from this album is Mack’s rendition of the King of Pop Michael Jackson’s new jack swing anthem “Remember the Time”. This album brings forth the New York City R&B sound to a new generation. For Mack it has created a strong foundation. It will be interesting to see where Mack Wilds takes his musical ambitions as time progresses.
