TripAdvisor held its second annual Travelers' Choice Attractions Awards, awarding Machu Picchu the main honor of Top World Landmark.
Currently, the famous Incan ruins of Peru have over 3,500 "Excellent" ratings at TripAdvisor, compared to the significantly low number of 10 "Terrible" ratings.
Machu Picchu has also been named one of the New7Wonders of the World, and it's not the only one to make both lists. The Taj Mahal in India came in third, currently boasting over 5,000 "Excellent" reviews. Although the Colosseum didn't make the list, its Roman neighbor in the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica, did, earning the fifth spot. It has over 6,000 "Excellent" reviews.
Other international sites that earned top honors are the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi, the Great Cathedral and Mosque of Cordoba in Spain, two ancient Cambodian sites (Angkor Wat and the Bayon Temple), the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg, and the Ancient City Walls of Croatia.
One American locale made the list as well — Gettysburg National Military Park. It didn't just crack the world's top 10; it was named the number 1 U.S. landmark.
The Top World and U.S. Landmarks were also accompanied by ratings for the Top World and U.S. Parks. The U.S. managed to dominate both categories, stealing four of the top ten spots in the world.
Canada came away with the crown, however, with Stanley Park in Vancouver being named the Top World Park. Spain came away with two awards, and France, Brazil, and Australia each earned one.
All awards were determined based on the number of reviews landmarks received, plus the quality of those reviews, over a 12-month period.
