Gerard Butler's Machine Gun Preacher and Coriolanus will make their North American debuts at the 36th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September it was announced today.
The 11-day festival will run from September 8 to 13. The Toronto International Film Festival is the leading public film festival in the world, screening more than 300 films from 60+ countries every September.
Coriolanus is the directorial debut for actor Ralph Fiennes. The film had its European Premiere at the Berlinale Film Festival in February of this year and was well received by critics. Its TIFF appearance will be its North American Premiere.
The stellar cast includes Fiennes in the title role, alongside Vanessa Redgrave as his ambitious mother Volumnia and Butler as Tullus Aufidius, an enemy army commander.
Coriolanus is a modern day version of Shakespeare’s tragedy – based on the life of the legendary Roman leader, Gaius Martius Coriolanus. Coriolanus (Fiennes), a hero of Rome, is a great soldier but despises the people. His extreme views ignite a mass riot and he is banished from Rome. Coriolanus allies with a sworn enemy (Butler) to take his revenge on the city.
The Weinstein Company has set a December 2, 2011 release date for the film in the US.
The world premiere of Machine Gun Preacher, directed by Golden Globe®-nominated director Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland), is the inspirational true story, about Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds an unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children. Butler delivers a searing performance as Childers in Forster’s moving story of violence and redemption.
Jason Keller wrote the screenplay for the $30 million, independently financed production that was filmed in Central Pennsylvania and South Africa. Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon also star.
Relativity Media, seeking to fill their fall schedule, recently acquired the US distribution rights to Machine Gun Preacher, from Lionsgate and has set a limited release date for September 23.
