A suspect who allegedly wounded four deputies while wielding a machete before he was shot in Hall County was identified Monday.
Mr. Justin Matthew Bennett, 27, was being held in the Hall County jail without bond on charges of felony obstruction of an officer and four counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer.
The shooting happened around 7:10 a.m. Saturday when deputies responded to the 200 block of Sailors Avenue in Gainesville after getting a report of an assault, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
“Following an investigation, investigators determined that Bennett committed assault against four deputies with a machete,” the sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Mark Mitchell said.
The responding officers used less lethal tactics that failed to stop Mr. Bennett’s aggressive behavior against the deputies, Sgt. Mitchell said. He did not provide any details on what those “lethal tactics” were.
“When Bennett failed to cease his aggressive behavior, an officer was forced to shoot. Bennett received a non-life threatening wound,” Sgt, Mitchell said.
After being treated at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Mr. Bennett was released into the Hall County Sheriff’s Office custody.
The unidentified deputy who shot Mr. Bennett was placed on paid administrative leave and the GBI was called in to assist in the investigation.
No details have been provided on the deputies’ injuries.
