Machado likely to miss Opening Day

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is unlikely to be ready by Opening Day as he continues to rehab and recover from his offseason knee surgery.

Machado had a bit of a setback and hasn't been running after experiencing soreness in his knee related to scar tissue.

He was supposed to meet with a doctor on March 18 to get cleared for more baseball activities, but it doesn't seem like that is going to happen now.

Buck Showalter doesn't seem quite ready to say Machado won't be ready for Opening Day, but the team is certainly not going to rush him back for the March 31 opener.

Showalter believes he could get Machado enough at-bats over a short time period, if necessary, to get him ready for the season opener.

With Jonathan Schoop having such a strong spring, it makes Showalter's decision about second and third base that much more difficult. He could put Schoop at second and Ryan Flaherty at third until Machado returns.

Alex Gonzalez is another option for third base, in which case Flaherty could remain at second and Schoop could begin the season at Triple-A Norfolk.

The good news is that Showalter obviously has a bunch of options thanks to the team's increased depth this season, something that should bode well throughout the year.
