MacDonald to Philly; Vanek to Montreal

After struggling with injuries, tough losses and an approaching deadline, the New York Islanders were at another crossroad. With Thomas Vanek wanting to test free agency and Andrew MacDonald not able to make a deal with Garth Snow, the Islanders had to test their luck in the market if they wanted to fill some unpreventable holes in their roster.

Andrew MacDonald was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for center Matt Mangene (Adirondack Phantoms), a third round pick in the 2014 NHL draft and a second round pick in the 2015 NHL draft.

Thomas Vanek was just traded today to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Sebastian Collberg and a conditional second round pick. The conditions are that if the Canadiens make the playoffs, the Islanders will receive a second round pick in the 2014 NHL draft and the Canadiens will receive a fifth round pick in the 2014 NHL draft. According to Garth Snow, the trade for Vanek was “the best deal that was tabled”.

The New York Islanders come off of a big win against the Winnipeg Jets last night, which was played without Vanek and MacDonald. Everyone is going to have to step up, as there are some big shoes (or skates if you will) to fill if the Islanders want to put more points in the win column.

The Islanders stay on the road as they take on the Edmonton Oilers tomorrow night. Puck will drop at 9:30 p.m. EST.
