MAC makes summer sizzle with free film screenings, concerts & plays

This July and August, Glen Ellyn’s McAninch Arts Center (MAC) launches its inaugural Summer 2014 Starlight Concert Series and Starlight Outdoor Movie Series at the new Lakeside Pavilion at College of DuPage on 425 Fawell Boulevard.

“A concert or movie or theater event under the stars at the Lakeside Pavilion is just the ticket to help forget the rigors of this past winter, so we’ve created a series of events for this summer that will resonate with everyone and be something they will want to enjoy with family and friends,” says MAC Director Diana Martinez.

For five weeks, the series will host free Friday night concerts at 7:30 p.m., starting with a July 18 performance by Beatles tribute band American English, followed by jazz guitarist Bobby Broom and the Bobby Broom Trio on July 25. On August 1, the U.K.-based ABBA tribute band Abbamania will play, followed by the Grammy-nominated The Holmes Brothers on August 8. New Philharmonic, the professional resident symphony orchestra at the McAninch Arts Center, concludes the series with a pops concert of movie and Broadway favorites on August 15.

The 2014 Starlight Movie Series screens free films at 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Pixar’s Up (2009; Rated PG), Steven Spielberg’s ET, The Extra Terrestrial (1982; Rated PG), The Blues Brothers (1980; Rated R) and Ghostbusters (1984; Rated PG) make up the movie lineup.

The 2014 Starlight Theater Series opens with The Count of Monte Cristo. The Alexandre Dumas classic is adapted by Christopher M. Walsh and staged by COD Director of Theater Connie Canaday Howard on July 3. Tickets are ($9-$10) are available at There will also be a free performance of The Troll Booth for families with young children at 5 p.m. on July 5.
