The Chicago premiere of Mike Daisey’s The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs is set for one-night-only on Monday, March 5 at A Red Orchid Theatre (AROT). The acclaimed 2010 monologue about the hidden costs of high-tech gadgetry is a benefit performance.
“We’re so pleased to present Daisey’s brilliant monologue in our intimate space starring Ensemble Member Lance Baker,” says AROT Artistic Director, Kirsten Fitzgerald. “This stunning piece is immediate to both our current production of Megacosm, and more importantly to our world at large.”
The play is currently running in New York to sold-out crowds, due in part to its New York Times review which states, “Anyone with a cell phone and a moral center should see this show.” The praise is echoed by the Washington Post which calls it the, “best original American play this year.” Even Steve Wozniak said, “I will never be the same after seeing that show.”
Playwright Daisey has created more than 15 monologues, and has been a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman as well as serving as a commentator and contributor to the New York Times, This American Life, WIRED, Vanity Fair, Slate, Salon, NPR and the BBC. The Brooklyn writer has been nominated for the Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama League Awards, and is the recipient of the Bay Area Critics Circle Award, five Seattle Times Footlight Awards, the Sloan Foundation’s Galileo Prize, and a MacDowell Fellowship.
Actor Baker has appeared in Becky Shaw, The Mandrake, Hunger and Thirst, and The Grey Zone, as well as directing the world premiere of Brett Neveu’s The Earl and co-directing the Chicago premiere of A Very Merry Unauthorized Scientology Pageant. A staple to Chicago stage since 1989, he has appeared at the Goodman, Steppenwolf, Court, Northlight, Chicago Shakespeare, and many others.
