Another day another spoiler. From the DailyMTG.com website comes another preview. This time it's the Black Soul:
Soul of Innistrad
Creature - Avatar
3BB: Return up to three target creature cards from your graveyard to your hand.
3BB, Exile Soul of Innistrad from your graveyard: Return up to three target creature cards from your graveyard to your hand.
Returning creatures from the graveyard to your hand has never been an impactful ability. Now, if this card returned creatures to the battlefield things would be different. Of course, there is little chance it would return three and, if it did return creatures straight to the battlefield from the graveyard, chance are that the ability would cost a little more.
Of course, things are still too early to tell if this will be good or not. The creatures you return will have to do something worthwhile to bring back from the dead. As of right now, there isn't much to bring back. Is there?
In a Standard format with many powerful cheap creatures, this could prove useful. As Gavin Verhey says in his article where Soul of Innistrad was spoiled, if you're allowed to untap with it in play, you will have the ability to draw three specific cards. Those cards are any three creatures you have in your grave yard.
Think of the current dredge decks right now in Standard. You're constantly flipping creatures like Nighthowler, Boon Satyr, or Courser of Kruphix into the graveyard. With a Soul in play, you could toss them in the bin without having to worry about how you'll get them back. Don't forget, a 6/6 for six mana is also formidable opponent, especially since it has deathtouch.
Maybe this creature isn't so bad after all. However, only time will tell if it's worthy of its Mythic Rare slot.
Magic 2015 will have its prerelease July 12-13. M15 will be legal for Standard play starting July 18. Game day for M15 will be on August 9-10. The official hashtag is #MTGM15.
