While there are many excellent uncommons to be found in a Magic: The Gathering 2011 Core Set draft, Fireball separates itself from the rest of the "pack" as one of the best limited cards.  Adding Fireball to your M11 draft ensemble is almost always the right choice, whether you're running red as a main color or not.

1) Easily splashable.  Fireball works in any deck, as you'll only need one red mana to start it off - the rest of the mana can be of any style.  This is especially relevant in a core set where attempting three or more colors can be extremely dangerous if you're hoping for a consistent manabase.

2) Always relevant.  Few cards are as versatile as Fireball in regards to limited play.  You'll always have a target, and Fireball always scales to the current stage of gameplay.

Fireball can be used to take out an aggressive early threat, deal with a mid game flyer, end game monster, or connect for 10 or more points directly to a player.

3) Yes, Fireball is better than Mind Control.  Mind Control is incredible in the M11 draft environment, but it's not even close to Fireball's flexibility and strength - Once a Fireball is played, that's that - Even incredible cards like Mind Control and Sword of Vengeance can be removed from play.  Fireball isn't getting stopped by anything outside of a counterspell.

Toss in the fact a Fireball is easily played as a direct damage "player removal spell" and there's little comparison between the two uncommon slot sovereigns.

If you are cracking open those packs of Magic: The Gathering 2011 Core Set in your next draft event, and the pack is dry of high quality mythics and rares, don't hesitate to go directly to the uncommon slot and take the Fireball.  Note that in many cases, it is an even better selection than the aforementioned higher rarity slots.  Simply put, Fireball gets there.

M11 Best Draft Commons: Red, Black, Green, White, and Blue.
