Chandra's Spitfire is a red uncommon creature feature from Magic: The Gathering's M11 core set, and makes Kiln Fiend look like a harmless puppy. Let's take a look at Chandra's Spitfire:
Chandra's Spitfire
2R
Creature - Elemental Uncommon
Flying
Whenever an opponent is dealt noncombat damage, Chandra's Spitfire gets +3/+0 until end of turn.
1/3
Okay, so Chandra's Spitfire is basically a flying Kiln Fiend that costs one more mana? Right? No, not exactly - Chandra's Spitfire has way more potential for some out of control red fun.
"Whenever an opponent is dealt noncombat damage" is a far more broad and useful ability, and could potentially bring Chandra's Spitfire to deal lethal damage by itself with a few creatures and a Raid Bombardment on the board.
Potential M11 interactions for this fearsome first-class flyer? From what we know of the spoiler currently, you can turbo-charge your Chandra's Spitfire with Fireball, Lava Axe, Lightning Bolt, Prodigal Pyromancer (every turn!), Ember Hauler, and of course some noteworthy synergy with Chandra's Outrage: eliminate one of the opposing creatures, deal 2 damage to the opponent, and inflate your Chandra's Spitfire all at the same time.
Swing, Fling, and you've got yourself a game winning series of red plays. Chandra's Spitfire is going to be a choice selection in M11 limited play, perhaps not a top tier pick but directly under them, a player just gets so much potential for three mana here.
There's a good chance players are going to attempt to break Chandra's Spitfire for standard play as well, as the ability begs to be tested with all kinds of tricks, but we'll have to take a deeper look at Chandra's Spitfire after Magic: The Gathering's M11 core set releases in a few weeks.
