Quietly tucked in near Ye Olde Clock Shop and the Baggins at Oracle and Orange Grove is Lyric Yoga. Since June 2006, this intimate and inviting studio has offered classes to serve the whole family.
Sharon Discorfano, owner and director of the studio, opened Lyric to create a yoga haven in the northwest area of Tucson to make yoga available for all ages. Sharon is also the developer of Khela Kids Yoga, a unique program for children that incorporates core values along with yoga poses and breathing. The next Khela Kids yoga camp is coming in June and Lyric is already taking applications. (See the Lyric website for details on how to sign up.)
Says Sharon, "I am especially inspired when I see families sharing yoga and connecting with each other. We at Lyric offer a variety of yoga classes to keep it interesting and welcoming."
That variety of yoga classes includes yoga classes offered seven days a week, with times in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. There is a weekly Prenatal Yoga, Gentle/Restorative classes, Hatha Yoga from gentle to all-levels, and even a Happy Hour yoga class to end your week on an energizing note.
Lyric Yoga also offers yoga classes with a therapeutic focus, including Jenny Kendall's (disclaimer: that's me!) Focus Yoga, a gentle class with a different therapeutic yoga focus each month and Rose Kress's Yoga for a Healthy Back.
Specialized classes offered periodically include Baby & Me yoga, Yin Yoga, and the Khela Kids classes. Each month you can delve deeper into different areas of yoga through weekend workshops ranging from Yoga philosophy to LifeForce Yoga, to mini-retreats like the upcoming Freeing Your Neck and Shoulders on May 1. Also in May is Alysa Volpe's Sun and Moon Salutations workshop.
As one of the Lyric Yoga teachers, I appreciate the serene environment that Sharon provides for teachers to be able to focus on the students. It's a quiet space that encourages reflection on the part of teacher and student.
I asked Sharon what about your studio gives you the most satisfaction? Says Sharon, " Knowing that there is a place where people are gathering each day and practicing together, reinforcing a sense of community and radiating that out into the world. At Lyric we are about what happens in the yoga room each day, but we are even more focused on the idea of what happens off the mat once we leave the room. Our practice is just the beginning of making more compassionate choices in our lives."
Looking ahead to Lyric's future, Sharon says, "We like to see people breathing and moving together, sharing their lives with each other as they come together each day. I would like to see Lyric continue to blossom, reaching out even further into the surrounding area and spreading the joy of yoga!"
