A series of six large scale photographs by Lydia Anne McCarthy, are featured this month in an exhibition titled Refraction at The Daniel Cooney Fine Art Gallery in Chelsea. McCarthy created these portraits using a self constructed camera where she replaced the lens with a special magnifying sheet known as a Fresnel; she made the photographs with refracted light. McCarthy portrays her subjects as possessing certain qualities that she wishes she, herself, had. Her subjects all strangers to her and therefore provide a blank surface for her to project her own narratives upon. McCarthy says, “This work is about an intense longing to experience a reality that is not my own.” McCarthy holds an MFA from the University of North Carolina and a BFA from Mass Art. Her works have been exhibited at the ACRE Gallery in Chicago, and the Block Gallery in Raleigh, N.C. The Daniel Cooney Fine Art Gallery (506 W. 25th St.) through July 27. The gallery is open during the summer Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
