There’s another feud-a-brewing over Django Unchained. This time 2 Live Crew frontman and Miami native, Luther Campbell aka Uncle Luke, is calling out Spike Lee on his boycott of the film. Campbell wrote a blog for the Miami New Times and in typical Uncle Luke fashion, he did not mince words.
The first sentence of the blog began with “screw Spike Lee” and then he further went onto to insult the Do the Right Thing director by saying that “[Lee’s] upset because [Quentin] Tarantino makes better movies”. While Campbell’s comment is subjective, he clearly has strong opinions about Lee. He even goes as far to compare Lee to Django’s despicable house slave, Stephen.
Campbell writes, “The man who puts Malcolm X on the big screen is Hollywood’s resident house negro,” and finishes the article with, “Spike Lee is upset because Samuel L. Jackson’s character in the movie is just like him: a conniving and scheming Uncle Tom.”
Lee responded to Campbell via twitter saying, “If I had let stuff like that stop me I would not have my body of work.” Lee had previously spoken to Vibe and said that Django was, “disrespectful to my ancestors” and vowed not to see it.
This is the latest in a long line of controversy that the film has already courted. Jackson made headlines when he encouraged a reporter interviewing him to use the n-word and Tarantino used the n-word backstage at the Golden Globes 2013 during another interview. It seems that almost a month after its U.S. release, people are still weighing in on their opinions about the film. Django Unchained is still in theaters and is nominated for an Academy Award.
