The Kenyan actress who was born in Mexico, yes Mexico has given much attention not only on the big screen but also on red carpet appearances. She was nominated in the supporting actress category for her work in "12 Years A Slave" and won. At only 31 years of age, Lupita stated she was excited to be at the Oscars although it wasn't a childhood dream for her.
I didn't grow up watching the Oscars. I really came to understand it was big deal in college. My dream was really to be an actor.
Lupita was chosen for the role on "12 Years A Slave" right before she graduated from Yale University's School of Drama in 2012. It goes to mention she has received 33 different award nominations since 2013 for her role of which she has won 25.
The proud winner was also a winner on the red carpet just before the award event. She wore a custom Prada baby blue silk v-neck gown paired with Fred Leighton accessories - a diamond headband, earrings and bracelet. She commented about her Prada gown, "It's a blue that reminds me of Nairobi, and so I wanted to have a little bit of home." Her entire wardrobe was buzzing on twitter - #Nairobiblue.
Lupita was born in Mexico while her father was teaching in Mexico City. She lived in Kenya until she was 16 years of age and then returned to Taxco, Guerrero in Mexico to learn Spanish at UNAM, the Education Center for Foreigners.
Congratulations to Lupita Nyong'o and continued success.
No matter where you're from, your dreams are valid.
