How does it feel to win an American Music Award in the show’s 40th anniversary year?
It’s amazing. I always look back to awards shows and think about being a kid watching them. These are iconic when you win one of these. And to be accepted all over America, and to be a fan of the award, it’s truly amazing. I’ve said on stage that I’ve been very, very lucky in fan-voted awards. I think I’ve won them all, and it means the world to me.
What’s your dream place to go when you want to escape in your free time?
My wife and I are in the midst of planning a farm and getting the farm together. We take off to the farm a little bit. Winter is out off-season. We typically go to the Caribbean somewhere and just chill out and reboot the computer.
Does winning an American Music Award increase your “cool factor” with your kids?
Just getting them Skittles. Bo, my oldest, he’s 4-and-a-half. He’s starting to understand it a little bit and may be actually trying to become me. We’ll have to deal with that later. But just having two boys at the house is amazing. It’s good. I love being a dad.
What are you going to do to celebrate winning this American Music Award?
We’ve got a very interesting, wonderful dinner planned with kind of a hero. But we’re going to be celebrating. I over-celebrate when I win things like this, so I’m going to chill it out tonight and just get right to the edge, not over it.
Can you say who the hero is with whom you’re having dinner?
No, I can’t.
