Luhnow, Mills aiming to hire bullpen coach for Astros over next couple of weeks

HOUSTON -- Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow informed Examiner.com Wednesday that the club plans to fill the open bullpen coach position on Brad Mills' staff over the next few weeks.

Jamie Quirk, who held the position over the last two seasons, accepted the job as the Chicago Cubs' bench coach in late November.

Mills stated at the Winter Meetings in Dallas that it was likely the team would address the situation after a new GM was in place.

The Astros hired Luhnow on Dec. 7.

At this point, the list of potential candidates remains limited, as the majority of teams have rounded out their coaching staffs.

"We've been talking about all of it," Luhnow said. "Brad and I continue to discuss this topic every day. The challenge that we're facing is it's pretty late in the hiring season. Most teams have their staff set. We have got our staff set, except for that position.

"I would expect in the next few weeks to see some resolution."

Although Quirk decided to move on in his coaching career, Luhnow wishes the former big league catcher well with the Cubs.

"I don't know Jamie personally, but I've heard he is a really good guy," Luhnow said. "He will be a good addition for the Cubs."
