'Lucy' has No. 1 debut at U.S. box office; 'Hercules' debuts at No. 2

Universal Pictures' action thriller "Lucy" was the No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending July 27, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on July 27, "Lucy" had $44 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending July 27, 2014. "Lucy" (directed by Luc Besson) stars Scarlett Johansson as a woman who finds she has superpowers after a drug she unwittingly has transported allows her to use 100 percent of her brain.

Paramount Pictures' action-adventure "Hercules" (starring Dwayne Johnson as the title character) debuted at No. 2, with $29.8 million in ticket sales. That number far surpasses the $8.6 million in ticket sales that "The Legend of Hercules" (starring Kellan Lutz as the title character) had in its opening weekend in January 2014.

Also noteworthy: The romantic dramedy "And So It Goes" (starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton) had a mid-range release and debuted at No.8, with $4.6 million in ticket sales
