Joshua Smith, a police officer in Tennessee, claimed that on Christmas Eve his life was saved by his badge when a suspect took a shot at him. According to Smith, when he pulled over the suspect that night, before he knew what was happening the man pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest. But for his badge, said the policeman, there would have been a workplace tragedy.
But now people are concerned that the Christmas miracle was actually a cunning myth and Smith’s story is being investigated after there were rumors that he made the whole thing up.
"We have heard the rumors that are going around,” Ray Garcia of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department told WREG-TV. “We are trying to remain impartial and investigate the facts of the case as they are."
Since so much time has passed—and there is no suspect or crime scene—the investigation may prove difficult, so the local police have called in the ATF for additional help.
