Hit-making country duo and Opry members Montgomery Gentry (“Hell Yeah”) may not be marathon men, but they are lucky men – the “My Town” boys get to take the Bridgestone Arena stage tonight in the town of Music City at the Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon concert. And that's something to be proud of.
And if you're more likely to run “all night long” (fittingly, that's the title of a MG/Charlie Daniels duet) than to run, literally – especially in the wee hours of the morning – then YOU'RE in luck, too: Montgomery Gentry vault onto stage only once the race slows to a crawl. You don't have to be in shape to step foot through the doors. But either way, if you're one in the crowd you'll feel stronger than you are if this duo has their way. Their good-natured taunting for crowd participation and Eddie [Montgomery]'s signature mic-stand move pumps up the volume to promise a good time for even the laziest of spectators. Like the lyrics of a recent MG hit say, “there's one in every crowd that brings the party in us out.” Only this time there's two and they're on stage. And contrary to what the should-be hit “Long Line of Losers” (co-written and first recorded by Texas star Kevin Fowler) title may say, all of Montgomery Gentry's music talent makes for a rather winning combination. It's beyond this journalist how the duo doesn't now have countless Entertainer of the Year awards.
So - tired of spinning your wheels in wait? Then you'd better get there quickly – tickets are general admission seats. Put on those tennis (or hillbilly, whichever you prefer) shoes and take a seat. Doors open at 6 and the music starts at 7. HER and Kings County open the show, followed by a short awards presentation before Montgomery Gentry start their set.
There are also bands on the run. For participating bands, times and locations click here.
As if on purpose, radio station 103 WKDF – whose slogan happens to be “103 Minute Music Marathons” is sponsoring one of the stages (spoken for by local favorites Porter Hall Tennessee and Christian-country group The Springs).
Also, if you're looking for associated causes to donate to please consider checking into Team Juanita's marathon cause – the Tennessee Kidney Foundation.
On a related note: after leaving their longtime Sony label late last year, Montgomery Gentry recently signed a new record deal with Average Joe's Entertainment (home to Josh Gracin, Colt Ford and other acts) and are in the studio working on new music with an expected single out in the very near future. Also, in December of last year Eddie successfully underwent surgery to remove prostate cancer – he truly does consider himself to be a lucky man.
Oh, and if cat-like is more your reflex style than running and you're jonesin' for something different – the Ryman might be more your alley: Tom Jones plays there at 8. It's sure to be the you-know-what's pajamas. Buy tickets here. He just released the new album “Praise and Blame” last July.
