Lucian Bute is virtually unbeatable at this stage

IBF super-middleweight champion Lucian “Mister KO” Bute overwhelmed Jamaican Glen Johnson to earn a unanimous decision victory Saturday night at the Colisee in Quebec City.

Bute (30-0, 24 KOs), a native of Romania who has long resided in Montreal, told ESPN.com he was pleased with his dominant triumph.

"It was a great fight and a great performance for me," said Bute, 31, a southpaw who managed to successfully defend his crown for the ninth time. "Glen Johnson is a great fighter. To beat him, you have to avoid the jab. I did that and I tried to out-jab him. I have to be able to beat guys like him."

Johnson (51-16-2, 35 KOs), nicknamed "The Road Warrior," is a former IBF and Ring Magazine light heavyweight king.

"The Road Warrior's" most renowned victory occurred when he violently, and scarily, knocked a still formidable Roy Jones Jr. onto Queer Street in the ninth round of their September 2004 bout.

Nevertheless, at 42, Johnson is shopworn and incapable of competing with a prizefighter the caliber of Bute.

"I think I won the fight," said Johnson, who injured his right arm in the bout before losing for the fourth time in six matches. "I beat him with one hand.

"It's tough to win in your opponent's hometown because as soon as he does one little thing, the crowd goes crazy instead of paying attention to what the punches are telling you."

Michael D’Avirro was born and raised in Montreal and, like virtually all Canucks, he is an enormous fan of Bute’s.

“I’m a fan of Bute’s because he fights out of my town,” said D’Avirro, 28, who has lived in Brighton since he started taking classes at Boston University in 2002. “I’m glad to see he’s becoming more and more aggressive.”

“Mister KO,” who is ranked by BoxRec as the preeminent super middleweight in the world, is an elite pugilist with the world of boxing at his gloves.

Lucian Bute is easily “able to beat guys like” Johnson and virtually any other prizefighter in the vicinity of his weight.
