Lucian Bute brutally KO's Jean Paul Mendy, Kelly Pavlik could be next

On Saturday, current IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute retained his title by successfully defeating previously unbeaten Jean Paul Mendy via a vicious 4th round knockout. Bute improves his record to 29-0 while Mendy falls to 29-1-1. According to BadLeftHook.com, Bute was in control for the entire fight before blasting Mendy with a left hand that sent him face first into the canvas.

Lucian was a heavy favorite coming into this fight as many boxing fans and pundits believed that Mendy was nothing more than a propped up paper champion. The KO was exciting but the victory did nothing to boost Bute's credibility.

Bute is rumored to be targeting Kelly Pavlik later this year provided that Kelly can win in his fight against Darryl Cunningham on August 6th. If Bute wins the Pavlik fight, then a showdown with the winner of Shwotime's Super 6 tournament between Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch could be on the docket for early 2012. We could then see an undisputed champion for the division.

Ward vs. Froch is set for later this year as a date and location are still being discussed. As of now, the fight is being targeted for Los Angeles, California or Atlantic City, New Jersey.
