Lucasfilm pulls the plug on 'Star Wars' series 3D re-releases

Deadline learned yesterday what I think is amazing news.

Following the announcement that J.J. Abrams (“Star Trek”) will now direct “Star Wars: Episode VII” Lucasfilm, via StarWars.com, has announced they will no longer re-release the other movies in 3D.

I’m sure this has nothing to do with the fact that the “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” re-release went over like a fart in the wind (sense the sarcasm?).

The studio has this to say, “Lucasfilm has decided to postpone this fall's scheduled release of Star Wars Episodes II and III in 3D. Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date.”

I think this is a smart idea as it gives them time to drum up new interest before attempting this stupid idea again.
