Saturday night will see the biggest showdown happen in college football this year. Actually, it may be one of the biggest showdowns in the past decade or more as the top-ranked LSU Tigers head to Tuscaloosa to take on the second-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. The media knows this too and that is why they are flooding into Alabama in droves.
Alabama media relations staff members states that an average Crimson Tide home game grants approximately 350 media credentials. A match-up with Auburn or Tennessee has that number jump up to around 450. As of now, Alabam officials anticipate approving about 600 for the big game on Saturday.
There are no actual records to indicate any of this as factual though.
The Bryant-Denny Stadium press box seats about 150 members of the media in three rows. There are additional seats and tables along with a photo deck for the overflow.
Saturday's winner could determine one of the teams to go to the BCS National Championship game in January. It will most likely at least eliminate one from contention. LSU coach Les Miles wants his players to take this though as any other game.
"I want the players to enjoy the glare and the light of the big stage," Miles said. "I want them to enjoy the opportunity to play for a big victory. Once I've prepared the team and after I feel I've done a quality job, I want the players to play with freedom."
If the Tigers win in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, then they'll have a little more freedom on their road to the Superdome in New Orleans and not for the Sugar Bowl.
