LSU's offense, led by quarterback Zack Mettenberger, played another game with over 300 yards for the second consecutive week. However, this week the Tigers got the win. Mettenberger completed 25 of 29 passes for a total of 340 yards for the night. The number of completed passes also marked a career high for the senior.
While the offense was on fire, LSU's defense looked sluggish during the first half of the game. During the second half of the game, they tightened up and only allowed Mississippi State to put 3 points on the board.
Les Miles had this to say about the defensive efforts in Saturday night's game, "I think the defense will improve. We only allowed three points in the back half of the game and outscored them 31-3. I think defensively we were much improved. Some of our young guys stepped up. We weren’t perfect in any way, but we are a young team that’s coming.”
Odell Beckam also had a career high game with nine receptions and two touchdowns. Beckham finished the game with 179 yards, his fourth game of the season with going over 100 passing yards.
Kenny Hilliard also had a good night scoring two touchdowns which were a career high. Hilliard racked up 39 yards in the game.
Jeremy Hill also went over 100 yards passing with 16 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns.
The Tigers are now 5-1 for the season and 2-1 in the SEC and will be facing #6 Florida this week in Tiger Stadium.
