LSU quarterback Stephen Rivers considering a transfer to Vanderbilt

LSU quarterback Stephen Rivers is considering transferring to Vanderbilt to be closer to home according to a news report on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

Rivers made a visit to Vanderbilt and had this to say about the trip, "It's a good option for me because it's really close to home. It's not official and I'm still trying to get everything worked out. I'm still open. I'm going to see how things are going to work out."

LSU has officially granted a release to Rivers for a transfer to Vanderbilt, but did not give him an "open release" to transfer to any school.

Rivers will have two years of eligibility left to play football, wherever he ends up. He has sat out during spring practice this year, in hopes of a transfer becoming official. Rivers, 223 lbs. is from Athens, Alabama and says that the transfer will put him closer to home.

Rivers was the backup quarterback for the Tigers in 2012, but fell to the number three position behind Anthony Jennings in 2013. Rivers is looking for some playing time, which is unlikely to happen if he stays at LSU. Currently, Rivers is working as in intern in the LSU Sports Information department.

Rivers will be eligible to play immediately at Vanderbilt under the new NCAA rule that states when a player has graduated and the school he graduates from does not have a graduate program in their field, they can play immediately for the new team they are transferring to.

River's older brother, Philip, plays for the San Diego Chargers in the quarterback position.

It appears that Rivers is just waiting on an acceptance letter from Vanderbilt at this time. He will graduate this spring from LSU.
