LPGA Tour adds Bahamas event to 2013 schedule

The LPGA will make its inaugural appearance in the Bahamas in May as the tour welcomes a new sponsor, Pure Silk-Bahamas, to its roster.

The full-field, 72-hole stroke-play event will take place May 23-May 26 at the Tom Weiskopf-designed Ocean Club Golf Course at Atlantis in Paradise Island, the tour revealed on Monday. The $1.3 million Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic was the first of several new tournaments tour officials plan to unveil later this week.

“There are few things more enjoyable than telling your players that they’ll be heading to the Bahamas for Memorial Day weekend at Atlantis Paradise Island," LPGA commissioner Michael Whan said in a statement. "To say the players are excited would be a huge understatement.”

Company officials were enthusiastic about their involvement with women’s golf.

“We are big believers in the LPGA,” said Thomas Murray, chief executive of Barbasol/Pure Silk. “We began our LPGA relationship working with some of the Tour’s top players and we have witnessed the positive business impact of that investment.”

The company sponsors several LPGA golfers, including the reigning Player of the Year Stacy Lewis, five-time tour winner Brittany Lincicome, and the ever-popular Natalie Gulbis.

The Ocean Club track recently garnered recognition as the Golf Digest’s eighth-best resort course in North America and the Caribbean and has hosted several televised events, including the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational.
