Tuesday, LPGA golfer Erica Blasberg’s death was ruled a suicide, according to the Henderson Police in Nevada. Dr. Thomas Hess was arrested on an obstruction of justice charge because he allegedly removed items from the Erica’s home (the crime scene) before the police arrived May 9 to find her dead.
"While asphyxia was the primary cause of death, the presence of prescription drugs in Ms. Blasberg's system was a significant factor," County Coroner Michael Murphy said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with her family as they move through this tragedy."
Hess told the Henderson police that he removed her suicide note. Immediately afterwards he stopped cooperating with local police, which complicated the investigation.
The 911 caller identified himself as Thomas Hess and said, “I came by to check on her now and she's dead. She put a bag on her head." Hess also said that Blasberg hadn’t shown any signs of depression in the few days before her death. Hess also said that she "sounded intoxicated" when he talked to her the day before.
Hess was arrested and released less than an hour later.
The coroner's report said that Blasberg died of asphyxia. Her toxicology report showed there were "toxic levels of prescription medication in her system." The coroner’s report stated the medications included: butalbital, temazepam, alprazolam, codeine, hydrocodone and tramadol.
Women golfers have become more widely known in the US. In Utah, there are several up and coming female golfers who have gained popularity in the state and outside of Utah.
