Loyal Heights Elementary School prepares for Bike to School Month

Loyal Heights Elementary School isn’t waiting until May to get their students enthused about bicycling. With the support of parents, Shannon Koller and Paula Shaw, students had their first neighborhood bike ride Friday after school. According to Koller, the rides being held April 5, 12 and 26 between 4 and 5 pm are to get kids acquainted with their immediate surrounding streets as well as routes to the Ballard neighborhood parks and athletic fields.

Shaw and Koller have been working with Loyal Heights administrators and teachers for a couple of years to encourage bicycling among their students. Active with Walk/Bike Schools, as well as avid bicyclists themselves, advocate for bicycling for health, exercise and fun. Before students ride they are taught safety and traffic rules and procedures. Last year’s Bike to School Day was a success and this year’s has promise of that and more.

Koller stating that activities will include bike skills workshops, bike maintenance station, helmet sale and bike to school registration. During Bike to School Month which is being organized by Koller and Shaw, the school will feature six special events before school as was done last year. These “welcome events” as they are being called will of course, include snacks and prizes. Those events will occur on the following dates: 5/1, 5/8 (National Bike to School Day), 5/13, 5/17, 5/21 and 5/31 from 9 a.m. to 9:35 a.m.
