We know that walking is great for us. In fact at an autoimmune seminar recently, the speaker told us that a ½ hour walk each day could mean tossing out some of our medications. Now we learn that walking can substantially reduce the chances that you will get breast cancer after menopause. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

There is no need to buy new fitness clothes and head to the gym and work with a personal trainer according to this new study, which tells us that taking a one-hour walk a day could lower your risk by 14%. The study was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

Be creative when you groan and moan about going for a walk. Go to the mall and window shop; park as far away from the entrance to the grocery store that you can and walk to the door; take a short walk around your neighborhood. These add up. You don’t have to walk continuously to reap the benefits.

If you do a bit of power walking, you will lower your risk of breast cancer even more, the study found.

Of course preventing breast cancer in the first place is the best plan of attack. Focus on what you eat. The Mediterranean diet has benefits for decreasing a variety of diseases, including cancer.

Wendy Chen, MD, MPH, a breast cancer expert at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute shares some information where you can read more. She states, “there is so much misinformation about the disease that it can confuse women.” (source and where you can read more)
