Low-cost sterilizations offered for cats in Des Plaines (Photos)

The Feral Feline Project has a great deal for cat families in Des Plaines 60018 zip code. Thanks to a PetSmart Grant, the organization is offering $11 cat sterilizations for any feral or pet cats while grant money is still available.

"This is a really good offer and one that will end when the grant monies run out,” says Serena Fried, president of Feral Feline Project. “We really want to see low-income pet owners and feral cat caretakers take advantage of these low-cost spay/neuter surgeries to help reduce the pet population in Des Plaines.”

The program is open to family pets or cats trapped through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs and will cover the sterilization of 70 cats. Although the program is not being restricted to those of low-income, FFP is asking that only individuals that find that it a hardship to have their pet spayed or neutered at their vet.

The $11 package includes a 1-year rabies shot, application of Frontline Plus (treatment for fleas & ticks), microchip and spayed or neutered. The cats also receive an examination, treatment for illnesses or minor wounds and are ear tipped. Feral Feline Project uses a private vet who provides the services at cost. Without the PetSmart grant, the cost for the above TNR package is $75 per cat.

Spay and neuter programs save lives by helping cut down on the increase in pets being sent to animal control. According to PAWS Chicago, Chicago Animal Care and Control put roughly 8,000 cats and dogs to sleep and transferred 4,200 pets in 2012.

Feral Feline Project is a non-profit organization that provides free and low-cost spay/neuter services for cats in Cook County, sterilizing more than 350 cats annually. Feral Feline Project relies solely on community support and grant funding to operate their clinic. For more information on Feral Feline Project visit us at Feralfelineproject.org.
