Low-fat diets don't prevent heart disease, accelerate weight loss, or prolong life, according to a report published in the medical journal BMJ Open Heart March 7.
Dr. James DiNicolantonio, a cardiovascular research scientist, said the 40-year demonization of saturated fat is based on flawed data and that a high-carb diet — especially one high in sugar — is responsible for obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, and early mortality.
Sugar is the real culprit, not dietary fat, said DiNicolantonio, who said the U.S. government needs to launch a public health campaign to inform people about the lies they've been told about the evils of dietary fat.
“There is no conclusive proof that a low-fat diet has any positive effects on health," said DiNicolantonio. "The public fear that saturated fat raises cholesterol is completely unfounded.
A public health campaign is drastically needed to educate on the harms of a diet high in carbohydrate and sugar. A change in recommendations is drastically needed, as public health could be at risk. We need a public health campaign as strong as the one we had in the '70s and '80s demonizing saturated fats — to say that we got it wrong.”
Dr. DiNicolantonio joins a growing number of leading medical experts who say a diet high in carbs (especially processed carbs and sugar) is what causes most of the degenerative diseases known to man.
Neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter said debilitating diseases like Alzheimer's, diabetes, epilepsy, obesity, heart disease and ADHD are 100% preventable by following a low-carb, high-fat ketogenic-style diet. Dr. Perlmutter detailed his research in his book, Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar.
According to Perlmutter, a grain-heavy, high-carb diet destroys the brain and the body, leading to weight gain, disease, and early death.
He said high-quality saturated fats (like grass-fed beef, organic butter, wild salmon, extra-virgin olive oil and avocados) have been shown in numerous studies to fuel rapid weight loss and prevent dementia. "Fat is your friend," said Dr. Perlmutter. "The brain thrives on a fat-rich, low-carbohydrate diet."
Similarly, Dr. Eric Westman, an obesity expert who oversees the Duke University Obesity Clinic, has seen thousands of morbidly obese patients experience dramatic weight loss on a low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet.
Dr. Westman said dietary fat is not the enemy of good health — it's low-quality carbs that is making us fat and sending us to an early grave. That's the premise of the low-carb, high-fat diet book Eat Fat, Lose Fat.
"I tell my patients not to fear the fat," said Dr. Westman. "Eat lots of fat. Fat makes you feel full. There's no problem with fat. In fact, saturated fat, the fat that we've been taught not to eat, raises your good cholesterol best of all the foods you can eat."
