Loving your work and working your love

Tuesday, August 26, 2014: Today should be a very productive day... you're gritty, focused, efficient and organized. You see where you want to go and that vision keeps you moving forward. So... quietly and efficiently market yourself, challenge the status quo and let everyone see what you're capable of.

Loving your work and working your love could be challenging today. If so... Consider that falling in love with your job is a lot like falling in love with another person. At first, you’re filled with butterflies and much excitement for the new experience. But, as you begin to learn more about the tedious routines and challenges that are part of any relationship... you can find yourself wondering if the challenges outweigh the rewards and asking yourself... "Is it really worth the effort?" or "Where did the love go?".

Maintaining a good and rewarding relationship with your work can be just as difficult. When the honeymoon phase is over (and it may feel like that today) and you realize the challenges of actually working it... with all its warts... on a day to day basis... take time to step back a bit and see that though the romance might seem to be over...the love is still there. And... the romance can be rekindled if you put in some extra effort and fire up the passion that brought you to the job in the first place.

It will help to remember all those exciting and fabulous things that made you say... "Yes, this is special and this is what I want to do with my life!". Certainly, time and stress may have brought the less favorable aspects of your chosen path into sharper focus. But fixating on the negatives that being "in love" once masked won't work... instead, accentuate the positive. Make a list of what you fell in love with... and another list of good things you've discovered over time. Focus on the rewarding aspects... think back to what first inspired you and stay determined. Rekindle your passions and you’ll be able to enjoy your work and the love affair can go on.

It's true that loving your work does not necessarily put money in your pocket... but loving your work and working your love can change your life... not just because you're doing work you love, but because of who you are when you're doing it

Today's Quote

“Yes, I’ve made a great deal of dough from my fiction, but I never set a single word down on paper with the thought of being paid for it … I have written because it fulfilled me … I did it for the buzz. I did it for the pure joy of the thing. And if you can do it for joy, you can do it forever.” ~ Stephen King
