Loving southern soul and blues with Southern Soul Assembly March 21, 2014

It is hard to imagine a more perfect show than the Southern Soul Assembly show at Center Stage March 21.

Southern Soul Assembly consists of established solo artists Marc Broussard, JJ Grey, Luther Dickinson and Anders Osborne. Together they perform their own songs and help each other out with harmonies and music. At Center Stage they also told funny stories, complemented each other and generally had a good time with the extremely enthusiastic sold out audience.

It was sheer fun and great music from start to finish. One of my favorite parts was when JJ Grey talked about playiing his music for his Mama, Daddy and Grandma in a van on the way to an outlet mall in Florida. When his son "Slow, Hot and Sweaty" came on his Mama exclaimed "I know you didn't just say what I thought you said." He said, "I'm a grown man. I can say what I want to say on my records. So I looked my Mama right in the eye in that rear view mirror and I said, "It ain't got no cuss words on it."

That's the sort of funny and personal story that abounded among the awesome songs. Another was Luther Dickinson's song "Yard Man" all about how he isn't one.

Not all of the songs were funny, of course. A showstopper was Marc Broussard's version of "Home" and another was Anders Osborne's "Summertime in New Orleans." There were many others and the audience loved every one.

The show was delightful from start to finish. If you have a chance to see Southern Soul Assembly jump at it! These guys are great individually but together they are sheer dynamite!
