Love Letters to extinct animals from San Francisco artist Alicia Escott

I have something more to say about San Francisco's Alicia Escott, exceptional artist and uncommonly original thinker, whose love letter to a Brontomerus Mcintoshi I presented a while ago.

Now it is time to hear Alicia talk about her art, her world-view and give us two more of several of the stunning love letters she has written to extinct animals. Alicia’s art is unusual in its approach with her use of plastic, non-recyclable materials. This is art that cannot help but educate the public in the results of careless modern living habits. The work, at once refreshing, disturbing and oddly encouraging, is an exploration of political, environmental, economic and spiritual issues.

Her story about the path she was meant to follow is a lesson in what can happen when a significant natural talent meets diligence and strength of purpose. Alicia’s letters are utterly spellbinding in their intimacy with creatures of an epoch long gone. She manages to telescope time so that a past never witnessed by humankind merges with an ordinary present and an inconceivable future. How fortunate she is to feel so deeply for creatures whose time has ended. How touching that she longs for their kinship, and how lucky we are that she put it to paper.

I invite you to hear these remarkable letters in Alicia’s own voice. Personally, they leave me breathless.

From me to you with love in the air,
Janet
