Love Letter to Heidi Kuhn from Afghanistan is an important historical document

See also

Heidi Kuhn, founder of Roots of Peace forwarded me a letter that I wanted to share. Roots of Peace, whose mission it is to remove land mines world-wide, has been in Afghanistan for a decade mentoring young people who are now in their 30s as professional members of the Kabul workforce.

Below is a love letter from a young Afghan man Heidi has employed for several years. With the kind of love that cheers on the success of others and an agenda that works only for safety of others, Heidi Kuhn is what real leadership is about. She glowingly reports that she has watched him grow from a boy to manhood during the past decade of work in Afghanistan.

Real improvement is realized when there is endearment between people. That this young man calls Heidi “Dear Mom,” and signs off “your son,” kind of says it all.

“Dear Mom,

Your idea brought significant changes in the world, especially to our country (Afghanistan) to empower the Afghan farmers to improve their economic through in agricultural productivity. What a wonderful creature you are! Happy Women’s Day Mom! We know that when women are empowered, their families are healthier, more children go to school, agricultural productivity improves and incomes increase.

Our programs support women and build their capacity We are thrilled that the undeniable need to empower rural women is in the spotlight this International Women’s Day, and that issues of gender equality are now being championed by governments, international agencies and civil society.

Regards,

Your son

Hamid"

This bonding between people working towards the same goal, I say, is the result that precedes the result. An important love letter here that is a commitment to devotion, an emotional contract between participants, and history documented in the hand of the person making it.

As an added joy, Heidi say that Hamid is engaged to be married next year. Won't that be nice if Heidi will be getting love letters from Hamid’s children who will, thanks to roots of peace, be born into and grow to adulthood in a safer world.

And, as a last word here, you know by now how important the politically and historically significant love letter can be. So, dive right in and send a love letter to someone complete with the present historical realities in your life.

Thank you Heidi for sharing this tribute not only to you but to the work you are doing on site and in public partnerships. Family is where you create it. Neither time nor distance can separate those who become family.

From me to you with love in the air,
Janet
