Love HGTV? Consider an Interior Design degree

The design world isn’t limited to channels like HGTV. The world of design is huge and anybody with a creative knack for transforming all kinds of spaces into something fully functional and visually appealing should look into the possibility of obtaining a degree in interior design.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for qualified interior designers is set to grow by 19% until the year 2020. This means those with degrees and training in the field stand a good chance at finding employment or even starting their own design business, which many interior designers do. Other career choices involve working at a major firm, where designers are assigned various projects, which could entail handling the redesign for a homeowner, corporate entity or collaborating with a remodeling company.

Although a majority of HGTV design shows focus on remaking homes, this is not the only type of space where interior designers operate. Depending on their chosen field of expertise, professional interior designers have the option of working on projects for restaurants, hospitals, theaters, hotels and other property types.

Fans of HGTV that can visualize themselves tackling the same design structured challenges would be wise to understand the responsibilities involved in the real world. Professional interior designers must learn how to work with others in the field, including but not limited to architects, construction crews and of course the client. Project tasks could cover a variety of all services related to design, from choosing color schemes, lighting fixtures, wall finishes, as well as developing sketches and/or floor plans according to information provided by the client.

The popularity of interior design has made it easier than ever to find a degree program, regardless of where a person lives. This is ideal because it means aspiring interior designers don’t have to feel limited to certain areas to pursue their studies. Students living in or near the San Francisco Bay Area have a handful of degree programs in interior design to choose from. Among the most notable schools in the area known for the strength of this program include The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising – San Francisco, The Academy of Art University, San Francisco State University and The Art Institute of California – San Francisco.

Aspiring interior designers must enroll in some type of formal education program, which ranges from 2-3 years in duration through schools that are solely focused on design or by enrolling in a traditional 4-year program through a college or university that has interior design degrees.

In addition to receiving instruction in college, apprenticeships play a vital role in getting new interior designers introduced to the industry. Failing to secure some kind of apprenticeship, which can last anywhere from 1-3 years, could make it very difficult for a new graduate to obtain employment. It is important for all interior design students to secure their place in an apprenticeship program, as well as utilize their school’s career services or job placement program, if available.
