Love, Death and Guillermo del Toro

From producer Guillermo del Toro and debutant director Jorge Gutierrez comes an animated comedy with a very unique visual style. The Book of Life is the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

Love, Death and Guillermo del Toro

And, when you bring Guillermo del Toro, Channing Tatum (Manolo) and Zoe Saldana (Maria) together to make an animated movie, as the first trailer reveals, “Something as magical, stylish and romantic as you’d expect” happens. Christina Applegate, Diego Luna, Ice Cube and Danny Trejo complete the voices in this romantic comedy set during the Mexican holiday of Día de Muertos.

Animator Jorge Gutierrez co-wrote and directs the movie. "The mandate of this movie was: Our 'Art of ' book is going to look exactly like the movie. And every artist poured their heart and soul into that idea," he says. The movie, which has a release date of October 17, a couple of weeks before Halloween, is inspired by Mexican folk art, old Mexican movies and stories from Gutierrez’s childhood.

Guillermo del Toro is one of the producers of the feature. Known for his bottomless imagination, personal vision and creativity (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Pacific Rim) del Toro is also known for helping upcoming filmmakers bring their own projects to life on the big screen using his influence to grease the wheels of production. While del Toro has definitely left his fingerprints on the picture, there’s a fresh spark on The Book of Life that’s all Gutierrez’s.

Twentieth Century Fox Animation and Reel FX Creative Studios produce the movie. The Book of Life was originally optioned by DreamWorks Animation, but never went beyond development because of “creative differences”.

The intricate and highly detailed animation shown in the trailer is gorgeous and I can’t wait to see the movies this fall. You can take a look at the official film website for more artwork and trailers in different languages:
