Love Chapel Hill? Love Wine? Carolina Inn Crossroads has it covered Aug. 21

Carolina Crossroads Restaurant, the award-winning sophisticated dining spot within the historic Carolina Inn on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (there, we said it) and now owned by Destination Hotels & Resorts, plans a very special Trefethen Wine Dinner Thursday, Aug. 21, beginning at 6 p.m.

Renowned Vinter and Chairman of Trefethen Vineyards John Trefethen will attend and also sign bottles of wine for guests.

During the past three decades, Trefethen wines have amassed a cornucopia of major awards and accolades, beginning in 1979, when its 1976 Chardonnay – just its fourth vintage – was chosen “Best Chardonnay” in the world at the Gault-Millau World Wine Olympics in Paris. Many more such honors followed, including its 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon being named “Best Red Wine in America” at the Atlanta International Wine Challenge and its flagship 2005 HaLo Cabernet Sauvignon being selected as one of the “Top Ten Wines” of 2009 by Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wines.

The special evening begins with a wine reception featuring a selection of six passed items. The vegetarian choices include Yellow Tomato Gazpacho, Corn & Basil along with Mint, Goat Cheese & Pickled Blue Berries. Smoked Trout Terrine, Pumpernickel & Horseradish Mousse and Lemonade Pickled Shrimp are the seafood selections, while the two meats are Chicken Confit, Preserved Lemon, Arugula and Seared Lamb Loin, Grilled Peach Relish & Mustard Aioli.

The five-course wine dinner commences with Yellow Fin Tuna, Avocado Cilantro Crème, Kohlrabi Salad, Lemon Oil, followed by Tomato Watermelon Salad, Chapel Hill Creamery Pheta & Basil Vinaigrette. Roasted Vermilion Snapper, Arugula Sun Choke Puree, Carrots & Orange Saffron Vinaigrette and Braised Pork Cheeks, Smoked Corn & Sea Island Red Peas, Pickled Cabbage, Roasted Onions are the two entrée selections. Dessert features Blueberry Basil Panna Cotta, Roasted Peach Crumb Cake, Thyme Wine Sauce.

If You're Going: The cost is $120 per person. Please call 919-918-2735 to make your reservation and space is limited. http://www.carolinainn.com/wine-pairing-dinner.php
