Love and money, finding the right balance

February is the "love" month. We are reminded by Valentine's Day to show that special person in our life just how much we care. As most holidays, this day runs toward the commercial version of our affection and Valentine's Day can be a costly celebration. Some of the traditional gifts such as flowers and jewelry can be budget busters.

So take the time to be a bit more creative and less costly with gifting. Planning to share time together or just exploring San Antonio can be less expensive. Since our San Antonio weather is so ideal in February, choosing an outdoor site for a picnic is romantic and less stress on the wallet. Taking a day trip to the Hill Country or exploring the Mission Trail can show the value of just being together.

And set a date for your financial review. This may not sound as romantic as a picnic but if you both see the importance of working on your goals together it really shows how much you care about your future.

Here are a few steps to follow:

1. Review your budget and goals. Are you saving for a special event or vacation together? It is much easier to reach a goal if you both agree on the path to get there.

2. Review your retirement accounts. This shows that you have that long-term goal to be comfortable in your senior years.

3. Review your credit cards and debts. Keeping your spending and your debts under control takes discipline and cooperation.

Love and money, find the right balance for your relationship.
