Love in a Bookstore

“You can’t do this on Amazon!” tweeted Eliane Wigzell about a recent real-life bookstore love story she found re-capped on twitter.

Ominvore Books, a cookbook store in San Francisco, live-tweeted about a young man who proposed to his girlfriend in their bookstore. The owner knew of the planned proposal ahead of time, so she documented the progress step-by-step with tweets and photos as the potential husband-to-be wooed his lady and patiently waited for the right moment to slip the ring in the cookbook.

As a supervisor of the Borders Books & Music in Camp Hill, PA for nearly two years, I have seen a lot of unusual, bizarre, funny, creepy things happen in bookstores, like the kid who projectile vomited in front of the Exorcist display, the 10-year-old kid whose parents used the bookstore like a babysitter dropped him off there by himself for five hours every Friday night, and the woman whose personal limo driver drove her two to three hours from her home just to visit our store once or twice a year.

But I never witnessed a bookstore marriage proposal.  For anyone planning to propose to me, keep this story in mind.  And remember, although bookstores are not yet extinct, they are disappearing quickly, so don’t wait too long.

So, how did the potential wife-to-be respond to the ring-in-cookbook?
