Loukstogo is a mobile eatery specializing in gourmet Greek food. The name of the business is derived from the Greek word loukoumades, which are the bite-size morsels of fried dough sweetened with fruit and nutella found in Greece and Greek festivals across the world.
Owner Aki Vourakis wanted to share his passion for the wonderful foods of his native homeland, but instead of opening a traditional brick and mortar establishment, he decided to put his restaurant on wheels to expand his customer base.
Having been open for a little over a month, Aki is still experimenting with different locations. For now the truck is primarily in the Los Angeles area for lunches and Orange County for dinner and late nights.
I've yet to make the trip to Greece, but if the "louks"in Athens are half as good as the ones Aki makes then I just might end up staying forever. Nothing quite like an indulgent desert from another country to get the old travel bug going again.
Aki was also kind enough to share his recipe for honey-feta fries. Something different from the standard french-fry we Americans gobble down year after year, Aki makes his with crumbled feta cheese and honey imported from Greece. The combination works, the starchiness of the potatoes and the tartness of the Feta all come together with the silky sweetness of the honey. Why can't all fries be like this?
I've been babbling on about all the sweet stuff and I almost forgot to mention the Gyros. Aki makes his a little bit differently, he adds fries to the meat which is something I have never tried, but instantly fell in love with. This method,as Aki explained to me, is how all Gyros are made in Greece. Go figure.
You can find Loukstogo through Twitter or their website: www.loukstogo.com.
If you want an authentic taste of Greece you've found the right place. I'll be posting the recipe for the honey-feta fries shortly, so stay-tuned!
