A Public Policy Polling survey released this week confirms that Republicans hate Barack Obama so much that they are willing to twist the facts to justify their hatred. Demonstrating an astonishing ignorance of recent history, more Louisiana Republicans blamed Barack Obama for the poor response to Hurricane Katrina than George W. Bush even though Katrina hit landfall in August of 2005 under Bush's watch, almost three and half years before Obama became president. Among Republicans who identified themselves as "very conservative" Obama was blamed over Bush by greater than a two to one margin with 36 percent of very conservative Republicans holding Barack Obama responsible for the poor federal response compared to only 17 percent who blamed Bush. 42 percent of Republican seniors found Obama at fault versus 24 percent who found Bush responsible.
Yes, in the mind of Louisiana Republicans, the poor federal government response to the devastating 2005 hurricane is Obama's fault for not being a good president while he was serving in his first year as a freshman US Senator from Illinois? Damn that Obama, it is all his fault! As for George W. Bush, well it cannot be his fault because well even though he was president at the time, he is a good white Republican from Texas, so it must be somebody else's fault. This is the brave new world we live in, where facts no longer matter, history is butchered and reality is reinvented simply to advance a paranoid, jaundiced view of the nation's problems and to place them all at the feet of the black Democrat in the White House who must be responsible for every evil in the country, no matter when, where, how or why it happened.
This is no time to mince words. The fact free FOX News and Breitbart universe that angry conservative white people live in is not simply an ideological alternative to liberalism, it has become a dystopian fantasy land that bears no tangible connection to reality. These ageing angry right-wing white people no longer even know why they are angry, they simply know that whatever their grievance is, it must be the fault of Barack Obama and the Democrats. Conservatives now confuse their utter delusion with rational thought and their intellectual nihilism is no longer a laughing matter, as their special brand of idiocy has now infiltrated state houses and congressional seats across the country. We can no longer afford to laugh at or dismiss these mental midgets as mere annoyances because they wield real political power and as such they can continue to elect delusional men and women to serve as our representatives in government.
When a group of primary voters within one of the nation's great political parties have descended into madness to the point that more of them embrace a false reality to justify their hatred for our president than will accept the truth, our country is in deep trouble. A party that will not even be bothered to acknowledge the simple truth because it conflicts with what they want to believe, is a party that is no longer useful or viable as a legitimate political party. Republican primary voters in Louisiana have demonstrated just how far out of touch with reality the modern GOP has become.
Next year it will be up to the sane voters in Louisiana to repudiate the modern GOP and let the lesson sink in that parties that abandon any reverence for the truth have no relevance to good governance. The delusional mindset fostered and nurtured by Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Alex Jones and Fox and Friends is no longer a joke, it has gone mainstream in the GOP primaries and it has created an anti-intellectual universe where the only "truth" that matters is that everything is Barack Obama's fault, even things that happened three and a half years before he set foot in the White House.
