Since it's formation in 1995 with support of the City of New Orleans, the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp has grown by leaps and bounds offering instruction in brass, woodwinds, piano, acoustic and electric bass, drums, percussion, guitar, music composition, swing dance, and vocal music.
Starting at 7 P.M. tonight (did we mention that it's tonight?) the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Jazz Camp will celebrate it's 20th anniversary with a benefit concert including special guest Kermit Ruffins, as well as 2014 Artists-in-residence “Queen of Swing” Norma Miller, Norma Miller, Dr. Courtney Bryan, Brian Quezergue and Charenee Wade with camp faculty: Kidd Jordan, Germiane Bazzle, Maynard Chatters, Kent, Marlon and Rachel Jordan, Jonathan Bloom, Peter Cho, Darrell Lavigne, Calvin Johnson, Gary Hulette, Gregory Agid, and Herman Lebeau.
Now independent of local government, The Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp employs the services of leading New Orleans jazz educators and performers, and annually hosts a highly accomplished jazz musician as an artists-in-residence. Now operating under the authority of the nonprofit New Orleans Arts & Cultural Host Committee, the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp has a proven, effective educational program that has achieved national acclaim.
The 20th anniversary, Louis "Satchmo" Amerstrong Jazz Camp benefit concert is taking place at Little Gem Saloon located at 445 S. Rampart Street in New Orleans.
