It looks like the Four Horsemen will be galloping into theaters once again.
Earlier this month, Lionsgate announced that they had greenlit a sequel to Now You See Me, this year's surprise international success, earning close to $300 million worldwide -- well over even the most generous of expectations. Details initially seemed rather speculative, seeing, when the news broke, no director, writer, or cast was announced.
Well, some of the speculation has ended. Now You See Me director Louis Leterrier announced in an interview today (8/28) that we will be returning to the director chair, furthering the adventures of Daniel (Jesse Eisenberg), Henley (Isla Fisher), McKinney (Woody Harrelson) and Jack (Dave Franco). While Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltenheimer said the film is shooting for a 2014 release date, Leterrier indicated that this may not be his next movie.
"I don't know if it's going to be my next movie," Leterrier said in the interview. "I know we want to do it pretty fast but I might be able to do another movie in between."
The news of the sequel is certainly not surprising given the success of the movie, which was made for a modest $75 million. However, anyone who saw the film will have the same question: where can they go from there? Leterrier sheds light on this, indicating the Blu-Ray release of the movie next Tuesday, September 3 will include a director's cut that features a deleted scene that serves as a set-up scene for a potential sequel.
"It was sort of ending up (with the movie) in ‘onto further adventures,'" Leterrier explained, "which is fine, but we don't really do that. We had a scene that we kept and when Lionsgate and Summit said, ‘Yeah, let's do a sequel,' I said, ‘Okay let's put it on the DVD and do the longer cut. It's after the credits, but I was very conscious of not jinxing it. This Summer I saw a couple of movies where they had ‘sequelitis' and you totally jinx it, but this was only for the DVD and only for the Blu-ray."
So, where will the plot take the Horsemen -- and the audience -- this time around? Leterrier gives no specific details about it, but did reveal the process going on right now in producing the sequel.
"We're writing it, and it's pretty fun. We had such a great time doing that and we loved the characters," Leterrier stated in another interview earlier today. "Our biggest problem now is that we have too many great ideas. We're sort of saying, 'What if he would do that? That would be amazing, I want to see this, I want to see that.' We want it to be intense and as twisty as the first one, but also learn more about the characters and go deeper, what a great sequel should do. That's going to take not too long, but enough so, just like in the first one, it's perfectly crafted. If you think about it, David Copperfield takes five years to prep, to create and prep. We just have a couple of years to do ours. David Copperfield was always saying, 'Your biggest challenge is you only have two years to do your movie, or one year to do your movie.'"
Could the mention of David Copperfield be a potential plot angle? What will the new post-credits scene on the Blu-Ray reveal? With 2014 right around the corner, it's certain that more details are sure to come.
Until then, make sure to check out the extended cut of Now You See Me when it's released on September 3.
