Hit comedy series Louie will return to FX on May 5 for a long-delayed fourth season, it was reported today.

The new season of the quirky comedy will run for seven weeks, with 14 episodes scheduled to air back-to-back every Monday night at 10 p.m. from May 5 until June 16. The series took a 19-month hiatus following a widely praised third season that saw creator Louis C.K. nominated for several Emmy awards.

“Louis said he needed extra time between seasons three and four of his show because – even though Louie was the most critically acclaimed television comedy series in America – he needed to make it even better,” said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. “Based on the first three episodes we've seen, remarkably, he accomplished his goal.”

Louis C.K. has a deal with FX that gives him total creative control over the series, making him the creator, star, writer, director and editor of each episode. The fourth season was to have consisted of a traditional 13 episode order, but the comedian delivered a bonus 14th episode to the network.
