About six months after his death was considered to have been brought on by "natural causes", Urooj Khan's was re-evaluated and reclassified as a homicide. Specifically, death by cyanide poisoning - which is said to be a fairly painful and rapid death. According to the report published Jan. 7, 2013 at Fox 8 Khan won a $1 million lottery scratch ticket and the day before he was set to receive his $425,000 prize check he ate dinner, went to bed, woke up screaming, and died later that day at the hospital. He never even got to see the actual check.
Khan was a business man who was married with a daughter, his wife was quoted in saying he was the "best husband on the entire planet". They owned three dry cleaners and multiple rental properties. It wasn't until police reopened the case after a family member pushed to take a deeper look into his death that there was any reason to suspect a motive for murder - but now the authories are not ruling out the big paycheck as being a motive of some sort. The authorities are also considering exhuming his body to determine how much cyanide was ingested.
