LOST sets the stage for last hurrah

Hello LOSTies!  Hope everyone enjoyed ‘What They Died For’ as much as I did! It was great to see LOST get back on track (so to speak) and start focusing on the 815ers again.

Sideways Timeline-
Jack’s eyeball was back (LOL) – as was that cut on his neck  – has anyone figured out how that’s going to tie into things?

Jack is content and having a nice family breakfast with David and Claire. Gesh, when is Claire gonna have that bay-bee?

“Technically, opening a box of cereal is not making breakfast.” –Jack to David

Desmond calls, pretending to be from Oceanic and says they’ve found Christian’s body. Hmmmm.

Desmond now sits in his car and watches the returning John Locke. Please, please, please do not tell me he’s going to mow Locke down again! Not if Dr. Linus has anything to say about it! Ben takes charge, protecting Locke and calling for help.

“I’m not here to hurt him – I’m here to help him let go.” –Desmond

Des defends his motives, then gives Ben a beatdown to make him remember as well. What’s up with all the beating, skull bashing, and killing this season?

“I hope there wasn’t an incident in the parking lot.” –John Locke

Later, a bandaged Ben runs into Alex who offers to help. She then says, “Hey, meet my mom!” and Danielle Rousseau pops out of a car in a dress and looking fab! They invite Ben to dinner and won’t take no for an answer. So weird and so hilarious all at the same time.

“We insist – even if we have to kidnap you!” –Rousseau to Ben

Miles reminds Sawyer of that evening’s concert, but since Charlotte is slated to be there, Sawyer declines. I’m loving how the finale is destined to bring all the LOSTies together again. And life seems to be imitating art in the way last week’s Lost Live concert brought past and current LOST stars together with fans.

Des then turns himself in (to Sawyer, of course) – just to get to Kate and Sayid who are also in lockup.

“Maybe this is happening for a reason.” –Locke to Jack

The inmates are being transferred, and officer Ana-Lucia is the driver of their van. Fortunately, she’s a cop on-the-take and lets the 815ers go free. Hurley is there to help, and apparently they’re all going to the big concert that evening. It’s getting good, folks!

Island Timeline-
Back on the island, Jack is stitching-up Kate’s injury (shades of her doing the same for him in the pilot). Kate begins to cry over Ji Yeon and life preservers from the sub wash ashore. Thank goodness someone FINALLY mentioned Ji Yeon! That made my well-up all over again.

Richard, Ben & Miles (last seen in ‘Everybody Loves Hugo’) finally make an appearance. And Ben has hidden C4 in his secret room: uh-oh. You know, for a tropical paradise, this place certainly has a lot of guns and explosives.

“I lived in these houses 30 years before you did – otherwise known as last week.” –Miles

Dharmaville is looking rough, and Miles’ spidey-sense starts going crazy. It’s Alex, Richard explains, as he buried her there after Keamy killed her. Ben chokes back tears and thanks Richard for his kindness.

Widmore is back, and Ben ain’t happy.  Zoe is with him; why is she there, again?  We were reminded of Alex’s tragic death, so you’ve got to know that wound is fresh for Ben. Widmore admits to rigging the Ajira plane with C4 … so how did Smokey know it was there before he boarded the plane?  Widmore also says that the one and only Jacob visited him and told him how to get back to the island. But no time for details – Smokey’s coming.

“It’s where I was told I could summon the monster. That’s before I realized it was the one summoning me.” –Ben

Miles freaks and heads into the jungle with a walkie-talkie. The MIB takes out Richard in one fell swoop. Seriously – that’s it for Richard? Surely he’s still lingering in the jungle somewhere waiting for Miles to find him. A stoic Ben stands his ground (although looking a little ill as he does it) and waits for Smokey’s return. The tension is thick, but Ben and the MIB have a civil front porch conversation and Ben totally gives Widmore away. Since we just revisited Alex’s passing, I would expect nothing less. Smokey makes short work of Zoe, and then promises not to kill Penny if Widmore will just tell him what he wants to know. But Ben’s not having it – he shoots and kills Charles Widmore, seemingly returning to the dark side.

“He doesn’t get to save his daughter.” –Ben to Smokey

Wait, I thought “the rules” stated that Ben and Widmore could not kill each other? Does that only apply off-island, or were all bets off once Widmore broke the rules and had Alex killed? Then again, the rules also stated that Jacob could never leave the island – but we saw him visit several people on the mainland. Can somebody please get me a copy of these ridiculous rules for review?

Sawyer is feeling responsible for the deaths of Sun, Jin and Sayid, but Jack assures him that it was Smokey’s fault. Hurley encounters both versions of Jacob in the jungle.

“Did you see a kid run by here with your ashes?” –Hurley to Jacob

“You should get your friends; we’re very close to the end, Hugo.” –Jacob

Everyone follow along closely … Jacob’s going to spill island beans, and once the fire goes out, he will no longer be available for questions from the audience.

“Come and sit down, and I’ll tell you what they died for.” –Jacob

Jacob needs a successor – it must be one of the four remaining 815ers and oh by the way, they’ve got ‘til the fire goes out to make this monumental decision. Having nothing better to do, Jack says, “Okey-dokey.” Kate asks why her name was crossed out and Jacob says it’s because she became a mother. I made a wonky face at that comment – couldn’t help it. Kate taking care of Aaron crossed her off the list? What about Claire? Does that mean that she really is beyond saving? And Sun was also a mother, but circumstances created by Jacob left her child an orphan. Maybe Kate caring for Aaron is not what made her a mother … perhaps the night she spent with Jack before the Ajira flight got her pregnant? Thoughts? Then Jacob says something even more confusing, “It’s just a chalk line, Kate, the job is yours if you want it.” WTF? Why go through all this then? Jack takes the job, drinks from the stream (ew), and Hurley says, “I’m just glad it’s not me.” Watch what you say, Hugo!

Where was island-Claire during this entire episode? The last time we saw her, she was with Smokey and he was going to finish what he started. Now, she doesn’t seem to be with either camp. But Claire is a pretty good tracker – and highly suspicious of everyone – so don’t be surprised to see her show up somewhere unexpected.

My favorite dialogue was between Dr. Chang and Hurley, when Chang suspected he, Miles and Jin were from the future and he was questioning Hurley about his date of birth and asked him who was president, etc. Chang: "You were in the Vietnam war?" Hurley: "Uh...yes?" The look on Jin's face was priceless!
