Lost & found in the Roanoke/NRV area

It is a characteristic of my personality that drives my husband crazy- I have to pick up every companion animal I see that is wandering the street. Rain or shine you will see me out stopping traffic while trying to chase down kittens, rottweilers, and everything in-between.   I even keep a bag of dog food and a bag of cat food in my car at all times for the more challenging animals.

After a decade of living in the New River Valley, I have found quite a few resources for local residents who have found or  lost their furry friends.  I have had success with many of these different sites and encourage you to try one or all of them if you find yourself in one of these situations!

New River Valley Lost and Found- Run by Jason Shelton and Kim Crisp, this site is the first one I go to.  It is updated regularly with photos and contact information of animals of searching owners and good Samaritans.  The site is even categorized into counties of southwest Virginia to facilitate your search.  All you need to do is e-mail Jason or Kim with your information and it is on the website quickly and highlighted as a new addition to the website.

New River Valley Animal Shelters Online- A listing of phone numbers and hyperlinks to all of the animal shelters, humane societies, and major fostering programs in NRV and the surrounding area.

Craigslist- This website (currently linked to Blacksburg) has become increasingly popular as a way for pet owners and pet finders to contact eachother.  I have posted on both the "pets" thread and the "lost and found" thread for maximum coverage.

Roanoke Times- This newspaper has a Pet-Finder section with almost-daily updates in the Roanoke area.

Fido Finder- A more nationally recognized animal lost and found website; you can offer specific details about the animal and the website will contact you if someone else is looking for/found a similar animal.

If you are familiar with another site for pet owners and pet finders to get together- please let me know and I will add it to the list!
