Dancing is a great way to exercise and get rid of those extra pounds. Obviously, some dance styles exert more energy than others, but for the most part, dancing can burn as many calories as walking, swimming or riding a bicycle, in addition to toning and tightening major muscle body groups.
Introducing the " Dance Dance Party Party", a weekly 90 minute all female unstructured, free-for-all exercise class that encourages the participants get down, get funky and get loose without having to be self-consciousness or worry about being dissed, judged or looking foolish.
According to philly.com, the concept started in New York in 2006 and was brought to Philadelphia by Graduate Hospital roommates Rachel Myers and Michiko Hunt in January 2009. "We basically did this because we like to dance." Hunt said. "We all remember being 12 and having slumber parties. It's a little bit of that, too."
"No judgment "seems to be the mantra. If you want to groove with the group, or do your own thing, it doesn't matter. "it's really fun seeing other people have fun. This is all about feeling free and not caring what anybody thinks." Myers stated. Excluding men from the mix also helps. Women can be themselves without worrying about being "hit on", or sending the wrong signals.
"Dance Dance Party Party" is held on Sunday afternoons at Arts Parlor a studio in South Philly on South Broad Street near Ellsworth. A $5 cover charge helps to defray the cost of the Bose sound system used for the exercise classes. More information can be obtained at: phillyddpp.wordpress.com
